Where does the Canon EOS R rank among the best Canon cameras in 2020? It squeezes more out of its 30.3MP sensor thanks to improved AF, producing images comparable to the mighty Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Its cropped 4K video is a sore point next to the best 4K cameras, but it still delivers beautiful footage in both Ultra and Full HD.
The 5D-IV has been out a long time now so its hard (for me) to readily recall all the performance machinations in reviews and forums. But I seem to remember that all things being equal the CF card is more reliable than the SD card when shooting video in 4k.
The Canon 5D mark IV records 4K in a large, relatively uncompressed codec. Does 5D Mark IV shoot 4K? But two years later and thanks to a C-Log update from Canon, the 5D Mark IV has aged rather well, and is still today a viable 4K video camera.
It’s another clear win for the Canon 5D Mark IV as it can shoot 4K video whereas the 70D can only muster Full HD video. At launch the 5D Mark IV was subject to a dramatic crop in 4K video mode but a firmware upgraded reduced this to 1.27x, which is much more manageable. Let's take a look at what we get with the "IV". Summary of Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Features. 30.4 Megapixel Full Frame CMOS Sensor; 7 fps continuous shooting and silent shutter mode; 4k 30fps video with 8.8 mp still frame grab, Full 1080p HD 60 fps, HD 720p mode at 120 fps; Dual Pixel CMOS AF for responsive and smooth AF during video or Live View may become more difficult than in normal shooting. When shooting 4K movies with Canon Log setting, [Peripheral illumin.] under [z1: Lens aberration correction] cannot be set (does not function). Canon Log can also be set for high frame rate movie shooting.

On the 5D Mark IV the 1.75x crop when shooting 4K in the common 16:9 aspect ratio gives you a 50mm field of view from a wide angle 28mm, which is a bit shit. Where is the sweet spot? Obviously the Sony A7S II leads the field on sensor size in 4K but surprisingly the crop sensor mirrorless cameras tick quite a few boxes even for those looking
